Honduras: Betty Rodriguez’s Journey in Coffee Production and Community Leadership in Agua Sucia

Story

Betty e Hija

Betty Rodriguez, a resilient and visionary leader in Agua Sucia, epitomises the spirit of empowerment and determination in sustainable coffee farming and community development.

A large portion of Agua Sucia’s economy relies on coffee production. However, agriculture is demanding and challenging. At times, production outcomes may not meet expectations, and market prices can fall below anticipated levels. The community also has no electricity, simple living accommodations, and no running water.

The Cooperative 25 de Julio is helping foster relationship-building between coffee producers and buyers in the international markets. Obstacles included limited infrastructure, technological accessibility, market insights, adherence to certifications and standards, competitive pressures, climate variability, and financial limitations.

Cuso International’s partnership with the Honduran Coffee Alliance and their relationship with 25 de Julio was instrumental in helping Betty expand her market and export her coffee at a higher price.

Cuso International, along with its partners, took a holistic approach by assessing the community’s needs beyond coffee production. This approach benefits the community as a whole, enhancing their quality of life and equipping them with the skills and opportunities needed for prosperity.

The project supplied solar dryers, conducted savings and business workshops, and implemented measures to safeguard natural water sources. They also organized climate change, agriculture, and GESI workshops, as well as played a role in facilitating the introduction of electricity to the community.

Within one year of these trainings, Betty and her group increased their savings by 50 per cent. In 2023, Betty saw a 12 per cent increase in her coffee sales through the new international market.

With the income obtained, Betty’s food security is improving and dreams of continuing to grow her business.

“Thanks to Cuso International, the quality of life for my family is now better. I consider myself an empowered woman!” said Betty Rodriguez.
