Canada Post Strike Threatens Critical Support for Women and Girls in Honduras, Warns Cuso International
News
Ottawa, ON — November 19, 2024 — Cuso International, a Canadian-based global charity dedicated to improving economic resilience and advancing gender equality, expresses deep concern over the ongoing Canada Post strike and its potential impact on vulnerable communities worldwide. The disruption could delay vital year-end donations that support women and girls in Honduras and 19 other countries where Cuso International operates.
“With year-end giving representing a significant portion of our annual budget, these delays are more than an inconvenience—they could mean fewer resources for those who need them most,” said Sally Douglas, Director of Engagement, at Cuso International.
Betty, a coffee farmer from rural Honduras, is one of many women whose lives have been transformed through Cuso’s programs. Living in a village with no running water, Betty struggled to provide for her family. Through Cuso’s support, she received better tools for production, financial literacy training, and access to partnerships with international buyers. Today, Betty’s thriving coffee business supports her daughter’s education and has improved her family’s quality of life.
“Thanks to Cuso International, the quality of life for my family is now better. I consider myself an empowered woman,” Betty shared.
Impact Beyond Borders
“When Canadians think about a postal strike, they may not immediately connect it to women like Betty,” Douglas added. “But for charities like ours, much of the critical funding comes from mailed appeals and mailed-in donations. Without these donations, the ripple effect is felt across the globe.”
Cuso International is urging supporters to shift their giving online or by phone to avoid interruptions and ensure life-changing programs continue. Donations can be made at cusointernational.org/donate or by calling 1-888-434-2876 ext. 238
“This is a pivotal moment for generosity,” said Douglas. “Not just for Cuso, but for countless charities in Canada relying on year-end giving to sustain their work.”
