Tania Guilbert’s journey in social work and advocacy is an inspiring example of dedication to social justice and gender equality. Born to a Canadian father and Peruvian mother, Tania grew up in Quebec, Canada, but she always felt a strong connection to her Peruvian roots. This connection eventually led her to a six-month internship in Peru during her social work studies. The experience ignited a passion for feminist causes and a desire to engage in meaningful work in Peru.

After working in Montreal for five years, Tania decided to return to Peru with her son to deepen her engagement with social issues. When Cuso International offered her the opportunity to join as a volunteer with Manuela Ramos, a feminist organization she deeply admired, Tania knew it was the perfect fit. Her work began in Lima, where she spent a year and a half building relationships and working on various initiatives. Eventually, she moved to Cusco, where her work took on a new focus.

Today, Tania collaborates with the Defensoría del Pueblo in Cusco, assisting with policies focused on “new masculinities” and the promotion of children’s rights. Her role involves working closely with both regional and provincial authorities to promote policies that encourage healthier, nonviolent forms of masculinity. By addressing the root causes of gender-based violence and promoting gender equality, Tania’s work helps create safer communities for everyone.

In addition to policy work, Tania plays a key role in coordinating workshops that promote gender equality and educate the public on their rights. Each year, she organizes around ten workshops, reaching diverse audiences, from students to mothers and the general public. These workshops provide valuable resources on gender equality and equip people with tools to act when they encounter or experience rights violations. Tania also helps coordinate and supervise social work projects, expanding the reach of the programs she supports and ensuring that communities have access to critical information.

Since joining the network of gender advocates, Tania has also worked tirelessly to support local fairs where communities can learn about available resources and services. She offers guidance on how to navigate situations of injustice and raises awareness about the Defensoría del Pueblo’s role in protecting public rights.

Tania’s path has not only brought meaningful change to the lives of many in Cusco but has also fostered her own personal and professional growth. From her early days as a young intern exploring her roots to becoming a dedicated advocate for human rights and gender equality, Tania’s journey is a testament to the impact that committed volunteers can have on communities. Her story serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to make a difference, demonstrating that a passion for social justice, combined with action, can lead to significant change.
