Rosana and Ehylu Lash Nails A Story of Resilience and Growth

Rosana, a 35-year-old Venezuelan woman born in Mérida, arrived in Peru four years ago with a dream: to build a stable future and give her children a better life.

Arriving in Peru was not easy for Rosana and her family. With a background in agro-industrial engineering, she faced economic hardships and the emotional toll of leaving her country. Her husband, who worked assisting other migrants at the border, joined her and their children on this journey. Her sister, already living in Lima, helped the family find a small home, but finding work remained challenging. After 15 days without employment, Rosana decided to turn to nail care and began building her business from scratch.

Named after her two children, Ehymer and Luisiana, “Ehylu Lash Nails” now offers eyelash lifting, facial cleansing, and nail design services. Her business took a positive turn when Rosana received support from local organization Kallpa, through Cuso International’s Sustainable Colombian Opportunities for Peacebuilding and Employment (SCOPE) project.

Working with Cuso International local partners the SCOPE project supports vulnerable Venezuelan and Peruvian populations to land formal jobs or create self-employment opportunities in the Lima/Callao, Piura, and Arequipa regions in Peru.

Venezuelan immigrant in PeruShe was provided essential training and tools to establish her business. She participated in virtual training sessions on marketing, personal growth, pricing, and financial management. During this time, she also received help to design her logo, set competitive prices, and manage her business accounting.

With Kallpa’s support, Rosana conducted market research exercises to compare prices and services with other businesses, which gave her a competitive edge. She also received a professional chair for eyelash lifting services and continuous follow-up for six months to help solidify her business. This support was not only professional but also emotional, providing sessions to help her cope with migration-related grief and the stresses of her transition.

Thanks to her training and efforts, Rosana’s business flourished. Before receiving seed capital, her monthly income was approximately 1,000 soles. Today, Ehylu Lash Nails generates between 1,500 and 2,000 soles each month. Rosana has learned to manage her finances and expand her services, now dreaming of enlarging her space and offering more facial care options.

A Vision for the Future and Rosana’s Resilience

Rosana considers herself a resilient woman, capable of facing any challenge that comes her way. Her perseverance has allowed her to send monthly remittances to Venezuela, where her mother and seven siblings live in Marinas. Although two of her siblings are now in Lima, the bond with her home country remains strong.

For Rosana, Ehylu Lash Nails is more than a business; it’s a symbol of her determination, her love for her family, and her ability to overcome challenges. With a clear vision and a desire to improve every day, Rosana continues working to expand Ehylu Lash Nails, keep learning, and set an example for her children that, with effort and dedication, dreams can become a reality.
