Mieke Busman holds Machu Picchu in her sights as she takes up the Cuso International Challenge

Mieke Busman lives in the trail capital of Canada, Uxbridge, Ontario, and this spring and summer she will be lacing up her hiking boots more frequently – to prepare for the Cuso International Challenge trek to Machu Picchu, Peru.

“I am really looking forward to it,” says Mieke, 64, who had planned to do the hike in 2020 before it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I love mountains, and I have never been to South America. I’m excited to see some of Peru and learn more about the people. I also like the physical challenge.”

A retired nurse, Mieke is keen to learn more about Cuso International and its programs as she hikes with fellow Canadians to the ancient Inca ruins. Before they leave, participants raise funds that will be directed to Cuso International programming, such as the Women’s Voice and Leadership project in Peru, which helps to connect women’s rights organizations and strengthen their initiatives, programs, and advocacy work.

“I am very attracted to Cuso International’s overall mission, of providing tools and knowledge to help people move forward in their lives,” says Mieke, who has already raised more than $5,000. “I believe meaningful change comes through mentorship and partnership.”

Mieke is originally from Amsterdam, Netherlands, has been a lifelong traveller, and has lived and worked in different parts of the world and Canada. “I have restless feet, and I prefer unconventional travel – backpacking, hitchhiking, camping.”

She originally planned to do the trek with her husband, Angus McKenzie, but in April 2020, he was hospitalized and needed open heart surgery. “We feel like there has been an angel sitting on his shoulder … if we had gone to Peru in March 2020 as was planned, he likely would not have made it.”

This fall, Mieke will hike alongside Kelsi Rousseau, a friend and former colleague.

“I am looking forward to travelling with Kelsi and connecting with the other participants, to learn about their lives and what motivates them.”
