Ethiopia: Gender equality program supports Urji’s education goals
Story
Cuso International’s U-GIRLS2 project continues to support young girls achieve their education goals in Ethiopia, including Urji Geleta.
The project helps address social and economic barriers that contribute to high drop-out rates, while also providing follow-up support to young girls in school. Through the project, students are provided with bags, exercise books, school uniform, sanitary pads and a financial stipend.
Before the project, Urji’s average grade was 82%, but after joining U-GIRLS2, her average result has increased to 93%. The support doesn’t just help on the academic side, but also the personal.
“Because of Cuso’s trainings, mine and other female students’ confidence has improved. Our leadership capacity has been built, and the project has helped us to increase our effectiveness in our school activities,” she said.
Additionally, she’s taken part in a five-day sexual and reproductive health training conducted by health professionals from health facilities near Assosa town.
U-GIRLS2 also provides training to parents, such as on savings and how to support their children at home, and gender sensitization.
“I consider myself lucky since I am embraced by Cuso’s project. I am grateful since there is a lot of transformation in my life and in my school performance,” said Urji.
