Cuso Internationalā€™s Diasporas for Development Programming builds upon over a decade of work the organization has undertaken to engage diaspora volunteers and communities in Canada and the US. The unprecedented size of the diaspora today combined with a greater than ever frequency in transnational movements, places them in a unique position to challenge current development models and experiment with new ideas and approaches.

In Canada, 6.18 million Canadians were born outside of the country. Statistics Canada estimates that by 2031 approximately 47% of the population will be immigrants, or have at least one parent who was born in a different country.

Canada is now the country with the highest proportion of diaspora population and Cuso International recognizes that members of diaspora communities have a long history of contributing in significant ways to the social and economic development of their country
