Canadian volunteers making an impact around the world

(April 2018 – OTTAWA) From far-flung places like the Philippines to the remote rainforests of Guyana, Cuso International’s volunteers are being recognized for their contributions during National Volunteer Week, April 15–21, 2018.

“With the support of Canadian volunteers, Cuso International is making a real difference in the lives of many around the world,” said Cuso International CEO, Glenn Mifflin. “Our volunteers work closely with partners, communities and families as they build better lives. Cuso International volunteers are involved in everything from protecting the environment, to fighting for women’s equality, to enhancing livelihoods. Their collective efforts are helping to change lives and improve futures. We are thankful for their support and dedication.”

Since 1961, Cuso International has deployed more than 13,000 volunteers around the world. From coast to coast in Canada, volunteers have travelled to Asia, Africa, South America,  the Caribbean as well as within Canada to integrate into communities for months, even years, to share their professional skills. Volunteers have various skills; they are teachers, business development advisors, gender equity champions, project managers, communicators and more. This past year alone, we placed 365 volunteers in 20 countries.

Cuso International volunteers hail from across Canada. These are just a few of the dedicated Canadians who are transforming lives around the world:

• Merle Kindred, of Penticton, B.C. is using birds as a bridge to connect Guyana’s Indigenous rainforest communities with tourists.

• Lori Stamm, of Halifax, N.S., is working alongside marginalized youth in Honduras supporting them as they learn advocacy and leadership skills.

• Tiffany Tong and Marshall Bell, of Charlottetown, PEI, ar in the Philippines helping small businesses affected by Typhoon Haiyan.
