Climate Legacy: Taking Action for Future Generations

Climate legacy

Many older Canadians are deeply concerned about climate change but aren’t sure how they can make a difference. Climate Legacy was created to help retirees and older adults turn their concern into action by leveraging their experience, skills, and resources. We spoke with Climate Legacy’s founders to learn more about their work and how others can get involved.

What is Climate Legacy, and how did it get started?

A group of us—now retired—who worked overseas with organizations like Cuso International came together in 2019, sharing our concerns about the growing climate crisis, particularly its impact on vulnerable Southern countries. We realized that just as we had once worked to address global development challenges, we now had a responsibility to take action for future generations. We asked ourselves: If not us, who? If not now, when? Climate Legacy was our answer.

What is your mission, and what are your goals for the coming years?

Our mission is to help older Canadians become active in protecting the environment and fighting climate change. Over the next few years, we want to expand our network, mobilize more seniors, and empower them with the knowledge and tools to make a tangible impact—whether through their financial choices, advocacy, or community engagement.

How do you engage participants, and where are they located?

We connect with like-minded individuals—many of whom are retirees with a lifelong commitment to social change—through community groups, social media, and virtual events. Most of our participants are in Ontario, but we’re looking to expand across Canada.

What actions can people take to get involved?

Many people want to help but aren’t sure where to start. We focus on demonstrating concrete steps individuals can take, from ensuring their investments and pensions align with sustainability goals to engaging in community-based environmental initiatives. If you care about nature, are a member of an environmental group or gardening club, or have been involved in activism in the past, Climate Legacy is a great way to continue making a difference.

Are there any upcoming events or initiatives for people to look out for?

Yes! We host webinars and online discussions about sustainable investing, community climate initiatives, and advocacy strategies. We encourage seniors to talk with their friends and family about climate action—after all, people are most influenced by those they trust.

How can Cuso RVs and others learn more?

We’d love to hear from fellow Cuso International alumni who share our concerns about climate change. Visit our website at www.climatelegacy.ca for more resources and ways to get involved.
