Ottawa, ON – September 24, 2025 – Canadians remain steadfast in their belief that international aid and global cooperation are essential to building a more just, sustainable, and secure world, according to new insights shared at a landmark evening of dialogue hosted by Cuso International in Ottawa.

The event brought together more than 120 participants, including parliamentarians, embassy representatives, private sector leaders, students, alumni, and donors, all committed to shaping Canada’s role in the global community. The gathering underscored a clear message: Canadians want their country to make its mark on the world through continued investment in international development.

Moderated by Erin Kelly of Advanced Symbolics, the evening featured a live poll confirming that Canadians strongly support funding for international cooperation, despite economic pressures at home.

Powerful Voices, Urgent Challenges

Distinguished panelists Rosemary McCarney, former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations; Hon. Christian Paradis, former Minister of International Development; and Dr. Bessma Momani, Professor of Political Science at the University of Waterloo, provided compelling insights into the evolving global landscape.

Their discussion reinforced three urgent imperatives for Canada’s international development agenda:

  1. Innovative Partnerships – Governments, NGOs, and private sector actors must collaborate more effectively.
  2. New Funding Models – Canada must explore fresh approaches to resourcing international aid.
  3. Harnessing Technology and AI – Digital tools are critical to addressing today’s global crises.

“The world is facing intersecting challenges—climate change, migration, conflict, and inequality—that demand bold leadership,” said Sally JM Douglas, Cuso International’s Director of Engagement. “Canadians consistently say they want their country to play that role.”

The Next Generation Speaks

One of the evening’s most inspiring moments came from the younger voices in the room. Their thoughtful questions highlighted the urgency of keeping youth perspectives at the center of policymaking. For many, global cooperation is not just a policy option but a generational necessity.

Canada at a Crossroads

With the Federal Budget on the horizon, the timing of this dialogue is critical. Participants emphasized that Canada has an opportunity to strengthen its global leadership by committing to bold investments in international aid and partnerships that reflect both compassion and strategic foresight.

“As our neighbours to the south reconsider their role in global development, Canada can step forward with purpose,” said Douglas. “The momentum is here, Canadians understand we are part of the world’s community and knows the power of collaboration and action.”
