The Volunteer’s Role
As an eLearning classroom monitor, you will generate a positive impact in the lives of Indigenous students by facilitating the program on behalf of the participating community. You’ll also get a chance to be involved and engaged with the community through many intercultural events.
Your experience as a volunteer in these remote communities will be enhanced by your involvement within the community.
-Engage with students as well as online (host) teacher to manage classroom routines, protocols, and academic expectations
-Collaborate with other participating community students and other classroom monitors
-Represent the classroom and students when communicating with the host teacher
-Help troubleshoot connection or other technological issues
-Contact student guardians with updates on course progress
-Monitor student progress (assignment submission, attendance) and work to solve issues as needed
-Ensure all necessary resources are available for students
-Act as an ambassador for both the school and the community
-Tutor the students when applicable
-Be able to pass a vulnerable sector police check.
-Possess a post-secondary level education.
-Experience teaching or tutoring, particularly with special needs students.
-Trained in working with children and youth.
-Good interpersonal and communication skills are an asset, along with your energy and enthusiasm for the job!
-Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples in Canada
-Previous volunteer work experience either in Canada or in other countries
-Broad knowledge of child development and teaching experience
-Experience working with Indigenous Peoples in Canada will be considered an asset.
About Our Partner
Beaufort Delta Education Council
The Beaufort-Delta Education Council (BDEC) is the most northerly school board in the Northwest Territories with all eight communities and nine schools located north of the Arctic Circle. The BDEC serves 1382 students in the region and is responsible for about 200 administrators, teachers and support staff. Cuso International is currently working with the schools in Aklavik, Fort McPherson and Tuktoyaktuk.
South Slave Divisional Education Council
The South Slave Divisional Education Council (SSDEC) is responsible for the education of approximately 1300 (JK-12) students in the South Slave region of the Northwest Territories. The Council's mission is to strive to prepare students to create their futures. The Council's primary responsibility is to provide for the educational needs of the students of the South Slave region.
Terms and Conditions
Cuso International terms and conditions allow you to lead a modest and healthy lifestyle while being effective in your placement. This support package will cover basic living expenses for the volunteer only and is not intended to cover home-based expenses (e.g., loans, support payments, etc.) or luxury items such as imported items in placement or international travel.

-Travel in Canada and accommodation during pre-departure training
- Support for accompanying partners/dependents is not available for this placement.
The Volunteer is responsible for
- Visa application and any costs associated with obtaining your entry visa
- Transportation to Ottawa (Canada)
- Accommodation in Ottawa until pre-departure training
- Vulnerable sector police check
We ask each Canadian volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.
