About E-Volunteering

 

Cuso International’s e-volunteering program welcomes new and returning volunteers to work with our international program partners and volunteers remotely. E-volunteering offers many of the benefits gained from international volunteering, while having the extra advantage of fitting into one's regular weekly schedule without needing a passport. Contributing and giving back to a community, gaining new skills, and making new connections are common benefits of e-volunteering and for Cuso International it is a great opportunity to engage more people in its mission.  

E-Volunteers are expected to supply their own basic home office equipment, Internet and have a moderate knowledge of computer technology. Some of our partners are located in remote areas with unreliable internet connection. Consequently, it is reasonable to assume that when working with the partners, emails will not be responded to immediately. For most of our partners, this is their first experience working with e-volunteers and flexibility and patience is a valuable e-volunteer characteristic.

The E-Volunteer’s Role

 

Are you passionate about teaching? Are you interested in dedicating time to developing ESL curriculum for small organic farmers, their families and partners, who are venturing into the tourism sector and are in need strengthening the English language skills?

As an e-volunteer, your role will be to support the in-country volunteer by finding and selecting ESL curriculum and materials for classes, work with her to develop a lesson-plan for each month and come up with new and interesting ways to carry out ESL classes with minimum resources and limited technology.

As an e-volunteer, you will:

- Introductory call with the in-country volunteer to discuss her needs and develop a workplan; provide any coaching on how to manage mixed-level classes and age-groups.

- Design lesson-plans and materials for each month. Review the lesson-plans with the in-country volunteer to ensure understanding and discuss what works/doesn’t work well.

Essential Academic Qualifications:

- Degree in social sciences, pedagogy, linguistics, or others.

- TEFL certificate or other ESL certification.

Essential Professional Background:

- 2-5 years of experience in TEFL.

- Specific experience teaching beginners and mixed classes.

- Experience putting together lesson-plans and curricula to meet the needs of the students.

- Experience teaching with limited technology and resources.

Cuso International Colombia

Cuso International in Colombia works to improve sustainable economic growth of poor and marginalized communities particularly women, youth, Afro-Colombians, indigenous groups, and victims of the armed conflict, including internally displaced persons within a general context of peacebuilding.

In Colombia, our focus areas are Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI); and Inclusive Sustainable Economic Growth (ISEG).

Through our ISEG programming, we work to prepare the communities that we serve to better integrate into formal economic activities through volunteer efforts to promote entrepreneurship programs and small businesses. Cuso International is also committed to promoting gender equality and social inclusion in all of its work, and in Colombia specifically, we are working alongside our partners to mainstream GESI to promote active citizenship, a more inclusive private sector, and positive gender identities in society.

Volunteers provide key partners with the skills, knowledge, and experience required to achieve greater impact and sustainability. The objective of all placements is to promote capacity-building and knowledge-sharing between the volunteer, the partner and beneficiaries. Volunteers should consider themselves as providers of support and play a consultative role, rather than a managerial one. The goal should always be to ensure the benefits of placements continue after they have gone.

Some of Cuso International Colombia's partners include: Sistema B and B-Corporations based in Colombia, including Fruandes, focused on value-chain development and inclusive/sustainable business development; Fundación Activos Culturales Afro (ACUA), focused on SME development; Escuela Taller de Bogota, looking at commercialization of products and supply-chain management; Corporación Autonoma Regional de Risaralda, focused on the model forest of Risaralda and natural resource management among others.
