I<\/span>t\u2019s been more than two years since\u00a0<\/span>Cuso International volunteer\u00a0<\/span>Elizabeth<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Thipphawong<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>landed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Laos\u2014and there is no question she\u2019s made her mark.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>er work\u00a0<\/span>on climate change and gender equality\u00a0<\/span>with the Gender Development<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Association<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(GDA)<\/span>\u00a0has<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>made strides in the\u00a0<\/span>country<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>been recognized on the international stage<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0<\/span>project<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with GDA\u00a0<\/span>won\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Transformational Gender Just Climate Solutions Award<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at the\u00a0<\/span>United Nations<\/span>\u00a0Climate Change Conference in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>2017<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of climate change initiatives and knowledge exist within these communities,\u201d says Elizabeth. \u201cThey\u2019re dealing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>climate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>change<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>every<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>single<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>day.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The majority of<\/span>\u00a0Laotians live in rural areas and 70 per cent rely on\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0crops they can collect during the day.<\/span>\u00a0Using<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>women\u2019s empowerment lens to bridge<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>traditional harvesting practices with sustainable initiatives<\/span>, t<\/span>he project\u00a0<\/span>benefitted\u00a0<\/span>4,500<\/span> women, their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>families<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fellow<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>community<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>members\u2014many<\/span>of whom belong to the\u00a0<\/span>marginalized\u00a0<\/span>Hmong and Khmu ethnic groups.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese are people who don\u2019t get to go to the grocery stores,\u201d says Elizabeth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWomen are the ones in the family responsible for this collecting. There\u2019s a high number of girls dropping out of school early. Women are going back to foraging immediately after<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>childbirth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Also,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>population<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>density,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>resources<\/span>are becoming scarcer.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women<\/span>\u00a0participated in train-the-trainer workshops to enhance their knowledge in the field of agriculture, sustainable harvesting and income generation. The project\u00a0<\/span>also focused on increasing<\/span>women\u2019s inclusion and impact on community decisions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe women are being uplifted as experts,\u201d says Elizabeth. \u201cWomen are traditionally the ones who harvest. They should be the policy makers.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Elizabeth, who lives in Peterborough, Ont.,<\/span>\u00a0was invited to join the Canadian delegation to the 63rd session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, held in New York City this past March.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She joined\u00a0<\/span>the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality<\/span>, along with senators, members of parliament, and other leaders from across Canada.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe United Nations brings the international community together to drive social progress and gender equality around the world\u2014a goal to which Canada is deeply committed,\u201d says the minister.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Canada will host the Women Deliver 2019 Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia<\/span>\u00a0this June<\/span>.
