Swibé William Monchena remembers a day when he delivered eight babies in a single shift.

“You’re tired, very exhausted. Sometimes you’re allowed to rest at least two days in a week, but sometimes you’re not resting, you’re just working continuously.”

Saying the maternity ward at Somanda District Hospital can be hectic is an understatement. There are days with more than 35 patients and only two midwives on duty. There are days with multiple complications at the same time. There are days with breathtaking victories and days with heartbreaking losses.
