30 Cuso International and VSO volunteers and relatives based in Tanzania and Rwanda spent an amazing weekend in the beautiful Rwandan capital to run the Kigali International Peace Marathon on Sunday May 27th, 2012. In doing so the Team raised CAD/US $7,289 in support the economic empowerment of women in East Africa.

VSO Tanzania country manager Jean Van Wetter and team leader and Cuso International volunteer Ishwar Persad, completed the full marathon in under 5 hours.

Margaret Graves (Cuso International), Liesbeth Kanis (VSO NL), Fran Bruty (AVI), William Hirtle (Cuso International) and Erica Corbett (Cuso International), Minnah Mbululo (VSO Tanzania) Farida Mohamed (VSO Tanzania) and Cees Weel (VSO Tanzania) ran the half marathon, with the other members of the group taking part in the team relay and 5K race.

Thanks you all! We can’t forget the photographer too, thanks to William Hirtle for the amazing photos.

Team captain, Ishwar, reports:

"The course was a very challenging one, which involved 4 hilly loops around the city and main stadium - they do not call Rwanda the land of a thousand hills for nothing. The cool morning conditions helped the runners maintain their energy levels, although two intense downpours did dampen things a bit."

After the race Rwandan-based Cuso International volunteers William Hirtle and Erica Corbett hosted a celebratory get together at their house for all participants, and we wish to thank them for opening up their house for us and for a super great time.

Thanks to you both!

Congratulations and thanks to all team members and we look forward to our next race and fundraiser - the Safari International Marathon in Arusha, Tanzania on September 9th, 2012.
